A evo i ovdje....

Mostar, Croatia - Tear gas and beer - what a combination...

After catching up a little more with my aunt, Ante and I headed to the town of Siroki Brijeg to see my cousin Mirko and his family one last time on our way through to Mostar. We'd picked up Marko on the way, and we had a great afternoon just laughing and chatting.

After getting to Mostar (gosh I'm so happy each time I'm here) we head to a brand new Sky Bar which is a sexy white and coloured bar on the rooftop of a large shopping complex overlooking the city, and getting the warm breezes come through as we sipped our late afternoon drinks.

Afterwards we rushed quickly to get to Ante's friends apartment and get changed - we were headed to a massive soccer match (the reason we went back to Mostar). Mostar Zrinski were playing the Serbian team Partizan in what was expected to be a massively tense game to qualify for the UEFA Cup. We crowded by the 1 entry gate (yes 1 gate for almost 8,000 Mostar fans) in the stinking heat - it was so hot I cant describe it, like standing under a heater for 2 hours and just sweating. Once we eventually got into the game we passed dozens of riot police to get to the Mostar supporter section and watch as the game (and rioting) unfolded.

Mostar was completely outplayed and outclassed 6-1 by Partizan, but the real entertainment were the Partizan fans who threw flares at riot police, were arrested and then continued to throw flares at the Mostar supporters. The game was almost cancelled 15minutes in due to their behaviour (and consequently after winning they were kicked out of the competition). After creating even more space in the stands between the 2 supporter groups, the ploice escorted Partizan crowds from the game and everyone went to hit the town to drown their sorrows (believing the Serb fans were on buses home).

Walking through the main street of town there were people everywhere, drinking, laughing, eating. Then the occasional bottle could be heard being smashed. Then a few more. Then a lot more. Lots of screaming too. Marko, Ante and I headed into a cafe to get some food just as the fighting erupted between Serb and Croatian fans (outside our cafe windows as it appeared), and with what sounded like gun shots, we were hurried into the cafe with the doors shut behind us to escape the tear gas bombs that the police had shot into the crowds to seperate the fighting.

Quite scary trying to fit 50 people into a tiny cafe, everyone coughing from the gas and trying to wet our eyes to stop them burning. Quite an experience let me tell you. I was convinced supporters who were still fighting 20m from us would throw the chairs from outside through our glass windows, but thankfully they didnt. We saw a few people pretty badly cut up and suffering the consequences of the gas, but the rest of us were mildly affected as we had stayed indoors.

With the sound of sirens we heard riot police escort Serb fans out of the town on their buses, and as the gas cleared we all were thankfully for having a good spot to get out of it all. Nothing a good shower wouldnt fix (it is a nasty feeling though coughing like that and having your eyes burn). PS: MIL - if you're reading this, dont tell Mum, she'll have a heart attack!

We showered and changed, then head back to find some food and a few drinks. The streets were scattered with broken glass but there was no trouble to be seen. Unfortunately after finding a bar to settle in, we copped another blow of tear gas but got away fast enough, we couldnt actually see or hear any trouble. Ante and Marko said that if the police hadnt been there to interrupt the fighting with the gas, 20 people probably would have been killed. Phew - lucky us eh?!? And as my Ante back in Melbourne put it, it's a wonder why they allowed the 2 teams to play against each other given their country's recent and violent history.

We ended up at a bar alongside the town's pool, sat drinking red bull and vodkas and spent the hours talking about our brilliant time together. We later headed to the Old Town for one last look at my favourite bridge, and some killer cevape as a late night drunken snack. We headed to bed (and slept about 1 hour), it was so hot I couldnt breathe, and literally spent 4 hours fanning myself with a pathetic piece of paper to cool myself down (I've mentioned Mostar is the hottest place in the world right!?!?!).

Three very groggy heads awoke the following day, and as we sipped our very last black coffees together, we were all very quite but a bit sad too. After a very memorable last day in Croatia with 2 of the most beautiful people I know, I was on to Split for a flight to Germany.

What a brilliant adventure.

What I'm grateful for:

- having 1 last night with the boys
- experiencing a full-blown European soccer match (I think I'm grateful!)
- getting to spend time with Mirok and his family again
- sitting around a bar table drinking and having D'n'Ms with Marko and Ante.

Ima i nešto slika koje je slikala dok je bila tu, zanimljivi su i komentari uz slike sa stadiona... :D

SLIKA 1 - Getting loud - Mostar, Croatia - Mostar fans singing their little hearts out

SLIKA 2 - And the trouble begins - Mostar, Croatia - It started w Partizan fans throwing flares at riot police, then continued to escalate as the game was suspended for 15mins as players tried to settle their fans

SLIKA 3 - Mostar fans - Mostar, Croatia - They sang in complete unison - was fantastic to listen to

SLIKA 4 - Entering the stadium - Mostar, Croatia - Almost everyone you see here is a Mostar fan, only about 1000 Partizan fans, though they made all the trouble

SLIKA 5 - Only 1 entry gate for the soccer - Mostar, Croatia
